A small, intimate staged reading of Art was presented at GUM Gallery on May 23rd, offering a stripped-down version of the text that placed emphasis on dialogue and timing rather than full theatrical production. The cast featured Bryan James as Yvan, Brian Fray as Marc, and Mikael Sandblom as Serge, with Viz Saraby reading the stage directions.
Presented in the gallery setting, the reading highlighted the play’s focus on language, disagreement, and shifting perceptions of value. In this format, the exchanges between the three characters came forward clearly, with humour and tension emerging directly from the text itself rather than from theatrical staging.
Within GUM Gallery’s broader programming, the event reflected an ongoing interest in presenting contemporary cultural work in accessible, low-formality formats. Bringing a canonical modern play into a visual arts space also reinforced GUM’s role in introducing varied and idea-driven artistic experiences to Meaford audiences, where conversation and interpretation remain central to the experience.
