UGLY

An Open Call from GUM Gallery

What is ugly? Bad taste. Awkwardness. Excess. Failure. Decay. Clashing colours. Uncomfortable objects. Unpleasant materials. Things that are crude, embarrassing, grotesque, cheap, badly made, or simply hard to look at. Or perhaps something completely different.

GUM Gallery invites artists to submit work for UGLY, an exhibition exploring ugliness in all its forms. We are interested in work that questions who gets to decide what is beautiful, tasteful, desirable, acceptable, or worthy of being shown in a gallery. Anything goes.

Painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, collage, assemblage, textiles, ceramics, found objects, digital work, video, sound, performance, strange experiments, failed experiments, and things that resist easy categorization are all welcome.

The only exception: no photographs of people.
